WWW.GRWE.CO.UK Ending Soon...

Please note that at the end of May, WWW.GRWE.CO.UK will cease to be the 'official' website of the charity 'Greyhound Rescue West of England. If you have a shortcut/favourite pointing to it, you will need to change it to WWW.GRWE.COM. A big thank you to everyone who supported this website and good wishes for the future to the new webmaster.

Greyhounds for Rehoming...

Please click on this link to find out more about the dogs that are currently waiting to find permanent homes. Due to the exceptionally large number of dogs on this page, we would ask you to be patient whilst it loads - thanks. The 'Rehoming' page was updated TODAY!

Lurcher Stolen in Dorset...

Colin, a light brindle and white lurcher, was stolen from his kennels in Wareham in Dorset on 9th April. He is only 10 months old and must be very frightened. He is tagged, neutered and microchipped. Please click here for more details, a photo and contact details should you spot him. Thank you.

Emma Milne in Dogs Today!

Thank you to all our supporters who have taken the time to email us over the past few days to highlight the TV vet Emma Milne's column in the May issue of Dogs Today, entitled "Dog eat Dog". In her column Emma Milne sets forth several alarming views on the nature of greyhounds, ex-racers in particular, and their (un)suitability for re-homing. Her views and shocking questions clearly undermine much of the good work done by every one of us involved in the rescue and promotion of greyhounds and greyhound crosses as the wonderful pets we know they are.

We have received your phone calls and emails and truly understand your concerns and dismay ~ we share them too!  Rest assured that GRWE will be responding to the column just as soon as we can.  We will also be raising our concerns with Beverley Cuddy, the editor of Dogs Today, and ask just why such a biased and "breedist" piece has been accepted and published.

We will not be reproducing Ms Milne's article but if you have read the article and wish to raise your own concerns directly with Dogs Today, then please click here to leave a message for Beverley.

We will also be contacting Emma Milne directly in an effort to dispel some of her pre-conceived notions about greyhounds and to invite her to come and meet some of our lovely ex-racing greyhounds waiting in kennels for a home. We would also like to invite her to visit even just a few of our dogs who now live happily with cats, chickens and other anmals in the hope that we can change her mind!

For those who wish to send a letter, either by post or by email, to Beverley Cuddy at Dogs Today, please use the following links to download a letter template for you to print off. How We Wish...

How we wish that all greyhounds could find their forever home like Jazz has! Here's a letter we just received from her proud family:

Dear GRWE

Last Saturday we went to choose our greyhound, or at least we thought it was us who were going to do the choosing! In fact we were the ones chosen by Jazz, who came back to us twice after being let off her lead in the kennel run!

She is a white girl, covered in spots so we call her our 'dalmation greyhound'! She's been with us less than a week and is nothing but a delight so far. We have had dogs before but never a greyhound and, as we don't have a huge house or garden, we were a bit worried how a greyhound would settle in. Well, we needn't have worried!

Jazz travels very well in the car and settled straight onto her bed with a chew when we got home. Friends came round for dinner and she was very friendly to them too so we don't think she has ever been mistreated as she is so confident around people. We expected tears the first night, but there were none. Although we have shown her around the whole house, upstairs is not for dogs so we have put a baby-gate at the bottom of the stairs. In return she is allowed to sleep on the sofa - a small concession if it means she feels secure at night and when we're not around.

We have introduced her to some short walks around the village and she seems happy when passing other dogs, although she really tried to take off the other night when she saw a cat! Fortunately, we had listened to Christine from GRWE and her collar was nice and tight so she did not manage to give chase.

Over Easter we took Jazz to a local beauty spot for a good, long walk and although she was 'goosed' by a Labrador dog as soon as she stepped out of the car, she just stuck her nose in the air and ignored him. We met lots of other dogs, both on and off the lead, and she was fine with them all although a bit apprehensive if a dog walked right behind her. She was easily the most beautiful dog out that day!

I have taken a couple of days off work to complete her settling in and also to gradually get her used to being alone at home. I work close to home so she won't be left for more than half a day and when the weather warms up she will come to work with me some days.

We are totally smitten with this lovely dog and are so glad we made the decision to get a greyhound. We hope that Girlie, the other bitch we looked at, is as lucky as Jazz and gets a home soon.

GRWE in the News Again...

The Western Daily Press recently ran a story about two of our GRWE dogs, Portia a lurcher who was tied up in a skip and Thin Lizzie who was found near to death outside of a travellers site. The response to the article from the public was so great that the WDP got in touch with us to do a follow-up on more of our dogs waiting for homes and the work we do!

So, on a wet and muddy Wednesday the photographer took us and the kennel dogs through our paces in the paddock! Here are some of the pictures they took of our dogs having fun in the mud!

There were two great articles too - click here and here to read them.

More Greyhound Horror...

Yet again The Sunday Times has uncovered another ongoing atrocity against racing greyhounds. This time the paper discloses how a veterinary practice in Essex routinely places any ethics or morals aside and kills healthy greyhounds, selling their organs and body parts for research. So even in death these poor dogs continue to be exploited for financial gain.

Muzzled Greyhound Lost...

GRWE have received this emergency appeal from one of our supporters. Dennis, a black greyhound with a white tip to the tail and wearing a green coat and a muzzle, was involved in car crash near Tadcaster, West Yorkshire on Saturday 2nd February and is now lost.

He was last seen at Sherburn in Elmet on Sunday 3rd February. Earmark: DP NML. Please ring 07882 101 287 if you catch sight of him! Click here to view his DogLost notice.

Dennis ran off after his owner had a serious car crash near Tadcaster, West Yorkshire on the 2nd of February. It was a nasty accident so he will be very frightened and, being muzzled, he will be in real trouble if he's not found soon . He has the following earmark: DP NML

Dennis was one of five dogs in the back of the van when it crashed and overturned. It was then hit by a 4 x 4 and three of the other five greyhounds died instantly with the fourth being pts at the scene by the vet.
