The dogs
on this page have all managed to find their way into our care by
one way or another. Many have been rescued from a certain death and
some carry emotional or physical scars from what they have been through.
Others come to us straight from the racing tracks, both registered
and independent or so-called ‘flapping” tracks.
At any one time we have around 50-60 dogs in our kennels, spread across the west
of England from Cheshire and Herefordshire to Somerset and Devon. The dogs you
see here are just a small selection – talk to us and we will certainly
be able to match you with one of our wonderful dogs.
We are open and honest about all the dogs we rehome and we will tell any prospective
home all the information we have about the dog, its background, needs and temperament.
GRWE does not sell dogs or make any charge for adoption. On average it costs
around £400 to look after each dog until adoption, including kennelling & veterinary
care. We receive no help from the racing industry or the government.
Any donation you wish to make will be gratefully received and will go towards
helping more dogs have the chance of a loving home.
Please telephone us or use the re-homing form at the bottom of the page to contact
us about offering one of these wonderful dogs a loving forever home. |
|
| If you
are thinking about adopting a rescue dog then please read this poem.
You will need to be committed to helping the dog to settle in, and
giving them time to “unpack”. Please understand that
some dogs will need more time and help to settle in than others,
but that
ALL dogs require patience, kindness and understanding. Please only
take the next step in the adoption process if you are sure you are
totally committed to giving one of our dogs a forever home! |

Bailey - is a lurcher x terrier aged around
18 months. His story is a sad one as he had been a gift to someone
in the armed forces who put him in kennels during their frequent
stays away. His owners then decided they no longer wanted him so
he was handed to a rescue where he stayed in the same kennel for
5 months. He started kennel guarding, probably because he'd been
there for so long, and the kennel maids were afraid of him! So
the rescue centre decided to put him to sleep. Fortunately, GRWE
were asked to help and Bailey was saved. This poor little dogs
hasn't had much love or security in his short life.
When he first came into our care he was a very worried little chap.
He disliked small spaces and responded far better towards women than
men. Bailey has undergone a period of assessment and we are pleased
to say he is doing really well. He no longer kennel guards, is a
happy little boy who loves cuddles - just look at that smiley face!
He is still rather frightened of new people, men in particular, but
is now ready for a home. He would be happier in a home without small
children. This lovely chap certainly deserves a home of his own to
settle in after all the upheavals he has had in his life.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Bailey. |

Buster - has had rather bad luck, having been
sent back from two homes. As you can see he is a beautiful
dog, and he is very loveable - his favourite trick being to roll
on his back, wherever he is, to have his tummy tickled. He
even does this at fundraising events, to the amusement of everyone
around him.
This lovely dog is adoring and adorable, but he does have quite a
strong personality and requires firm, confident leadership
- for that reason we think he would do well in an experienced home
where his owners would help him to understand that he is not 'leader
of the pack'. Buster has been receiving help and training
at his kennels, where he is now behaving beautifully and with perfect
manners, and this needs to be continued in his new home.
In the right environment and with experienced owners to help him,
Buster will make a marvellous pet. We do not think Buster should
live with cats, small dogs or children, but he would do very well
with other greyhounds.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Buster. |

Cassy - is a beautiful white and black Greyhound
bitch who is not yet 2 years old. We were asked to take her after
the dog warden picked her up as a stray. We are unsure what has happened
to this girl as, when we checked her ear tattoos, we found that she
is shown on the racing authorities' database as having been put to
sleep! She is most certainly alive and well and, has been shown as
being a previous racing dog with races at a registered track to her
name. So, has someone tried to lose her somewhere in the system?
Whatever her past is, Cassy's future is sure to be bright, and a
new life is just around the corner for this gorgeous young lady.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Cassy. |

Charlie - will be 3 years old in October and
is an ex-racing greyhound. His career on the track was not a glittering
one as he only raced 16 times before it was time to hang up his jacket
and call it a day. He was handed in to our care by his trainer together
with his sister Sophie. His owner really wanted him to have a pet
home, and would have loved to keep him but doesn't have the room.
Charlie is a large dog but could only be described as a gentle
giant. He is really cuddly and affectionate and will make a wonderful
pet.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Charlie. |

|
Copper - is a 7 year old black greyhound dog
who raced 117 times before retiring. When his owner decided to
move his racing dogs to another kennel, Copper's future was very
uncertain and he came into rescue. Copper is currently living in
a foster home. His foster mum says he is house-trained, good with
children and very loving. He does, however, have an issue with
small dogs and he is definitely NOT cat friendly. He would probably
be best suited to life in the country with someone who has experience
of big, strong and, sometimes, wilful greyhounds. Off-lead Copper
will come when called in an enclosed area and he will be a wonderful
companion in the right hands.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Copper. |

Crystal - this beautiful greyhound girl with
the distinctive markings will be 2 years old in June. She was
bred for racing, and her owner clearly wanted the best for her as
she was handed straight in to a rescue in the NE of England by her
owner. He wanted to secure a place for he, ensuring that she
went to a good home. Crystal is small, very pretty and she
has been tested cat friendly.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Crystal.

Daisy - is
a very pretty blue and white bitch and we are told that she is
two and a half years old. Daisy is an ex-racer but broke a toe
recently and so she was retired. The toe was removed and as she
previously lost a toe on the other foot, she only has three on
each of her front two paws. She has spent some time in a house
following her foot operation, and is nearly there with her house
training. Daisy is a very nervous girl who is wary of human contact
and any loud noises or sudden movements. Daisy is quiet, is non-
destructive and fine with other dogs, including small ones. Daisy
needs a quiet house with no young children and preferably another
dog who will give her confidence She needs a patient owner who
wants to nurture a dog, give her space and who won't expect instant
love and devotion. Daisy will be a bit of a project, but when she
settles down she will make a wonderful pet. She CANNOT go
to a home with cats.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Daisy. |

|
Dandy - is 3 years old. This very handsome
- and very aptly named! - black greyhound dog has come to us directly
from his trainer. He is a rather shy boy but with the gentle tlc
of the kennel staff he is slowly coming round in our kennels. Dandy
had 20 registered races so his career wasn't a particularly glittering
one. Dandy says he would rather be upside down on a sofa with his
legs in the air than running around a racing track. We think he's
got the right idea!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Dandy. |

|
Dolly - is
a beautiful black greyhound bitch aged three years old. She was
bred for racing but didn't make the grade and was instead used
as a coursing dog. Dolly is NOT cat friendly but loves other dogs
and is friendly and sociable. She is quite small but very solidly
built and has a lovely smiley face. Dolly has come to us together
with Puzzle and Yippee from a dreadful situation in Ireland. You
can read more about their story here.
Dolly and her friends appear to be in good shape physically but they
are understandably very nervous dogs who ideally would be better
placed in a home with another steady dog for company. We will NOT be homing them with small children.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Dolly. |
|
Faith - is a fun and energetic 4 year old
girl with a black coat and some brown smudging around her face.
She was abandoned and, although ear-marked we cannot find any details
of her race history. She is certainly in sound health and full
of the joys of living. She is very affectionate and loves human
company. She adores being cuddled and groomed when she will stand
still long enough – usually after a big race round the paddock!
She wags her tail constantly so you will be in no doubt how happy
she is.
Faith would need an older family as her exuberance may be a little
much for young children and she would benefit from an experienced
owner who would teach her the firm but fair rules of the house. We
think she would be better suited as an only dog initially until she
settles down but she will give a lifetime of delight with her antics
and the twinkle in her eye.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Faith. |

|
Finist - is
a white and black Greyhound dog who is 5 years old. He is
a tattooed greyhound who came to us from a dog pound in South Wales
in July 2007. We re-homed him but
sadly he was returned to us, something which is always very sad for
us. Finist is confident dog who bounces on the lead and whirls
around quite a bit ~ if he is allowed to of course! This can
be a bit off-putting to inexperienced
people, but is quite easily cured. He has recently been with an
experienced foster carer who found him a delightful dog, full
of fun and life. Sadly he did not see eye to eye with
one of the dogs in the pack so he had to come back to kennels. Finist
is NOT cat friendly.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Finist. |

Freya - is
an 18 month old black bitch who has come to us from a flapping
track. She has no injuries but was just not up to speed. She is
a happy, friendly girl who is not too bouncy for her age. She is
a sociable girl who likes other dogs and, like all greyhounds,
loves people of course. Freya met some children the other day and
approached them with her tail wagging and her eyes bright, so maybe
somewhere in her past she has met children before ~ who knows!
At the moment Freya is not looking her best as she is underweight
and has had a flea allergy so her coat is thin and poor. She has
been bathed, flea treated, and is putting on weight now that she
has settled in. In just a short time she will have a coat so shiny
that you will be able to see your face in it! Freya CANNOT go to
a home with cats.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Freya. |

|
Guiness -
will be 6 years old in October. He is an ex-racing greyhound whose
racing history tells us he last raced in 2005. Where he has been
in the meantime is anyone's guess. He was picked up as a stray
and was never claimed, like so many other greyhounds who are cast
out when they are no longer fast enough. Guinness was in a stray
pound and GRWE were asked to take him as the pound was getting
full and spaces were tight. Guiness is a sociable boy who loves
everybody and is very good natured. He will make a wonderful pet.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Guiness. |

Hudson, as you can see, is a stunningly handsome
blue dog, aged just two years. He has a beautiful face with
kind, interested eyes and he is in fact a very kind boy, who can
be hugged and handled with complete safety.
We are not sure why Hudson was retired from racing at such a young
age, because he is of sound health. He gets very excited when
he sees any kind of van, so he is obviously longing to be off on
a new adventure. Hudson is very strong, especially at times
like those, so we feel that he would benefit from a firm handler
with some experience of lead training.
However, we are sure that once Hudson is in a home with regular exercise
and lots of new things to think about, he will forget all about racing
and settle down to being a truly wonderful pet. Hudson is extremely
safe with people, but would NOT be suitable to live with cats.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Hudson. |
 |
|
Jack - is a gorgeous fawn greyhound dog who
is only two years old. We are sure you will agree that he has the
most wonderful green eyes and is the kind of dog who turns heads
in the street! Sadly, Jack has not been well cared for and he came
to us from a dog warden who had picked him up as a stray - just
another unwanted dog thrown away. Jack was clearly bred for racing
as he is a tattooed but he was never registered to race. He is
such a handsome boy and is so friendly with people and good with
other dogs.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Jack. |

|
Jasper - is
a lurcher aged around 18 months old. He came into rescue having
been abandoned as a stray. He is the size of an average greyhound
bitch and is black. His hair is a bit sparse on his legs and he
has some quite large scars on his body, so who knows what has happened
to him before coming to safety with us. Jasper has the ability
to jump stock fences but has not attempted the 6 foot kennel fencing.
If he does jump he makes no attempt to run away and has reasonable
recall. He is good with most other dogs but not cats and isn't
really a chaser. He could easily have hopped over the fence to
the chickens he lived with in his foster home, but he chose not
to. Jasper would be a good agility dog and needs an active home
where there is lots going on, and he'd simply love to be with teenagers
to play with him and interact. Could he be the dog for you?
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Jasper. |

Jester - is a black greyhound dog who
is 4 years old. He has run nearly 60 races on registered
tracks but his last race was over a year ago. Since
then there is no history on him, until he ended up in a dog
pound in the North of England recently. We assume he's been
racing on a flapping tack in the meantime, but we will never know. Jester
is a big dog with a big personality! He walks well on
the lead but is so friendly he sometimes jumps up and puts his
paws on your shoulders. This could be off-putting, especially
to young children. It's fair to say Jester loves people, whether
it is cuddling with them or leaning on them, he is most definitely
a people-dog! He has an old shoulder injury which doesn't seem
to bother him at all, but may be aggravated by off-lead exercise.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Jester. |

Josh - will be 4 years old on the 1st of May. He
is a very handsome boy who was passed on to a totally unsuitable
home (not by GRWE!) once his racing days were over. He was only in
this home for six weeks when he was rescued from an emergency abusive
situation, and we were asked to help. He is slightly hand-shy but
he has lived with a male greyhound and he is used to teenage
children. He is house trained as long as he is let out at regular intervals, but
he is not keen on small dogs or cats. Josh is a lovely
boy who needs and deserves a stable home ~ he would like nothing
more than to be blowing out the candles on his birthday cake in his
new home!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Josh. |

Lady - is
a stunning black Greyhound bitch who is coming up to 5 years old. Her
racing days are behind her and she is now looking forward to her
retirement and hanging up her racing silks. Lady has
had 47 registered races and
her trainer has asked GRWE to find her a secure home as a pet. She
is of course only used to life in a greyhound kennels, like all other
ex-racers, but will soon settle in the routine of home life!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Lady. |

Lucy - is
a 6 year old greyhound bitch who is an ex-racer. She finished racing
some time ago and has been living in a home since then. For reasons
which had nothing to do with Lucy, she was put up for re-homing
and thus came into our care. Lucy is a solidly built girl who loves
other people and is keen to make friends. She is housetrained and
is able to be left for periods of time on her own. She is a steady
girl who needs some stability in her life after all the upheaval
she has had, and will be a lovely companion for the right person.
Lucy CANNOT go to a home with cats.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Lucy.

Max -
is a fawn greyhound cross who is around 18 months old. He was involved
in a traffic accident and was taken to a vet for treatment by his
owners. But when it came to paying the bill, his owners would not
pay and instead they left poor Max behind at the vets. GRWE were
asked if we would take him and thus he came into our care.
Not surprisingly, Max is unhappy in kennels. He is probably wondering
where his family has gone and what he has done to end up in a kennel!
Max barks quite a lot in kennels, but he is a nice dog who just needs
someone to understand him!! He is a bright lad who will shine for
someone who is prepared to spend time with him. In just a short time
he has learnt some basic commands and is desperate to please anyone
who pays him attention. Please see beyond Max's boisterous ways -
offer him a forever home and he will reward you handsomely.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Max. |
|
Max II - our lovely madcap 100 mile-an-hour boy!
Max will be 6 years old in May. He retired from racing on a flapping
track 6 months ago with no injuries and has been waiting for a place
in kennels ever since. When he came into rescue Max was very fat
and quite stressed. He's quite breathless when he is running (in
a safe enclosed paddock) and it seems like he has had very little
exercise since he retired from racing. We are slowly increasing his
exercise and Max is getting fitter by the day.
Max has only ever known kennel life and has had a very limited world
up until now. He takes every new experience in his stride and is
making the most of his new environment and loving every minute of
it! He is a confident dog who is great with people and has previously
shared his kennel with a greyhound bitch. He will need to be carefully
introduced to other breeds of dog as he simply does not know what
they are, having only ever met other greyhounds his whole life. He
cannot go to a home with cats.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Max II . |

Monty - is a lovely brindle Greyhound dog
who is 5 years old. He is a registered greyhound who has
had 50 races on a registered track. However, there is no history
since his last race eighteen months ago. Sadly, he too ended up in
a North of England dog pound in a very poor condition ~not much of
a "thank you" for his efforts we are sure you will agree. He
has taken some months to recover, and bring back to full fitness
in readiness for re-homing. He is very friendly but is a
little strong on the lead.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Monty.

Nellie - is
an ex-racing greyhound who is now looking for a comfy retirement
sofa. She has raced 77 times and now, at the age of nearly 5, she
feels its time for a rest. She has come directly from her trainer
and is a lovely, friendly and affectionate girl who loves people
and who will soon adapt to her new life in a home environment.
Many people comment on how easily ex-racers adapt to life in a
home and because they are so used to a routine they tend to just "slot
in" to living in a home
with the minimum of fuss. We are sure that Nellie will be no different!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Nellie. |
 |
|
Penny - is
a sweet girl, aged five years, who
has lived in a home with a young family, who sadly were unable
to keep her. She is safe with small children, housetrained
and good in the home; however, Penny does prefer to be the only pet. She
becomes rather jealous of other dogs and, while not aggressive, makes
it quite clear that she is not happy with the situation. For
example, she insisted on overturning the water bowl every time the
other family dog wanted a drink. What a little madam and not
very ladylike behaviour at all!
As a single pet, however, Penny will make a smashing companion
and will lap up all the attention she is not prepared to share with
anyone else!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Penny. |
 |
|
Prince - is a 4, soon to be 5, year old greyhound
dog who has only ever known kennel life. He is an ex-racing greyhound
who has had 52 registered races during his career. Prince was gifted
to us from his
owner, together with Silky. They have been staying in the racing
kennels but as they have both retired and their owner could not
keep them at home, GRWE were asked to help. Prince is a big dog and
oh-so handsome too.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Prince.

What a handsome lad Rock is!
This lovely black and white greyhound dog is only two years old
and although he is tattooed in his ears, he has never been registered
to race. It is possible that Rock may have raced on an un-registered
track, but we shall never know for sure. Rock is just a baby who
needs to be shown the ropes and learn the right way to behave.
He has spent some time in a home and is said to be good with children,
house trained and non-destructive.
Rock has tested
NOT cat friendly.
Rock is such a lovely chap, we are surprised that he hasn't been
snapped up! He is still waiting in kennels for his forever home
to come along, and within the next day or so he will be going to
a foster home to chill out. Rock is such a people dog, he loves
to be with you, and he is friendly around other dogs too. He likes
nothing better than to use his human companion as a "leaning post" whilst
he is having a cuddle ~ he absolutely laps it up and is practically
purring! Who's going to offer this gorgeous boy his own sofa?
Please
phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Rock. |
 |
|
Silky - with be 5 years old in June. He is
an ex-racer who has only known life at racing kennels so far. All
that is about to change of course and we are sure he is already
dreaming of his own sofa and a cosy home life. Silky has had 66
registered races and came to us directly from his trainer, together
with Prince. They have been staying in the racing kennels but as
they have both retired and their owner could not keep them at home,
GRWE were asked to help. Prince is a big dog and is looking forward
to greeting you with a bear hug!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Silky. |
 |
|
Sophie - will be 3 years old in October. She
has come directly from her trainer, retiring after only 3 registered
races, so her career was not a long one! Her trainer handed her
over with her brother Charlie as she wanted both dogs to have the
very best possible chance of a new life in a home. Sophie is a
really lovely little girl who loves everyone she meets. Just look
at that face, we are sure it could melt even the hardest heart!!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Sophie. |
 |
|
Tom - is yet another of our black greyhound
dogs. He is 4 years old and what a lovely boy he is with such a
shiny coat too! Tom came to us from a general breed rescue who
had too many dogs and would never manage to rehome a black greyhound.
Tom is a nice and affectionate boy who loves everyone he meets
and likes nothing more than a cuddle. He is tattooed but was never
registered to race, so we will never know anything about his past
life. We are certain his future will be far brighter and hope it
won't be long before he finds a sofa to call his own and all the
love he needs.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Tom. |

|
Whiskey -
is a super dog who is around 3 years old and who really
deserves a break. He has been with us a long time and we are very
fond of him. Whiskey came to us from a dog pound so we know nothing
of his history. We re-homed him with a family but he was returned
to us following some incidents where he challenged both adults.
Whiskey knows his own mind and can be very single-minded when he
chooses to be! However, Whiskey has lots of very positive points
and in the right home will make a loving and loyal pet.
Whiskey needs someone who is a strong leader yet who is not going
to meet his challenges with more challenges, as this will mean
that Whiskey will rack things up a notch! A calm confident person
who will show Whiskey that they are in charge will mean that he
can relax and start enjoying life!
Whiskey is a very bright dog who loves a game of ball and lots
of interaction with people. He can sit and his recall is good too,
as is his house-training. Whiskey loves people and responds well
to those whom he respects. He can at times be quite full-on with
other dogs but has lived very happily with a greyhound bitch in
the past, and will happily play with dogs whom he knows and has
been introduced to. He cannot live with cats. You can see Whiskey
on his very own special
photo shoot here - and what a very lovely chap he
is too!
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Whiskey, or click
here if you would like to help sponsor his £10 per day kennelling
costs. |

Zak - is yet another black greyhound
~ our kennels are full of them at the moment! This lovely greyhound
dog is not yet 2 years old so he's just a baby. He has white ticking
all over him and is adored by everyone at kennels! Zak is an ex-racer,
although he has only raced a few times, as he was rather useless!!
He was taken straight from the track by a man whose partner was about
to give birth so things got rather stressful at home and he advertised
Zak free to a good home in the paper. We are sure that you will agree
that Zak deserves much better than this! He is a lovely quiet & gentle
dog who is house trained & used to young children.
Please phone 07000 785092 if you
wish to rehome Zak. |
