Just Dog Breeds Dog Rescue Award 2007

Welcome to Greyhound Rescue West of England

AnimationGreyhounds make wonderful family pets in the right homes. They have affectionate and patient temperaments and contrary to popular opinion, don’t require vast amounts of exercise or food. If you would like to know more about the dogs in our care and what is involved in the rehoming process, please look through the pages on our website and then contact us on the helpline number below.

As a charity, GRWE is very fortunate to have a group of experienced volunteers who support the rescue and rehoming process, as well as organising events to raise awareness and funds. We have no paid employees and do not own any kennels.

GRWE receives no financial support from the greyhound racing authorities towards the welfare of the very dogs that underpin this whole industry. We rely totally on the support of the public for donations to pay for the cost of caring for the dogs. Our major expenses are the hire of kennel space, and veterinary fees.

The geographical area covered by GRWE is dependent upon our financial and human resources, and at present includes all the counties from Cornwall, across to Bedfordshire and northwest to Cheshire.

At any one time we are caring for between 60 and 70 dogs. Homechecks are always carried out first, and around 500 dogs were placed into suitable loving homes last year. For an entirely voluntary organisation this is a remarkable achievement of which we are justifiably proud.

GRWE has teamed up with Justgiving.com to enable supporters to make donations safely online. If you would like to make a donation, but don't want the bother of writing cheques and posting them, then simply click on the following link wherever you see it on our site and you can make your donation safely online from the comfort of your own home!!

Raising money is fundamental to the operation and success of GRWE, as we receive no state aid or funding from the greyhound industry. In 2006 we set ourselves an ambitious income target of £360,000 which we knew would cover our planned expenditure and leave us room to respond to emergencies. Our actual total for 2006 was just short of £300,000 but this was our best ever yearly total reflecting the huge efforts of our supporters & volunteers, and allowed us to cover all planned expenditure.

For 2007 we are aiming once again for that figure of £360,000. To enable supporters to monitor our progress towards that target, we will be updating the income thermometer below to show our progress each month. With the help of all our friends that donate their time and efforts to the work of our charity along with the generous donations from members of the public, we hope to make 2007 an even better year and beat the total for 2006.

Please take some time to look though our website to see the ways in which you can help the dogs. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Below is just a selection of dogs rehomed with your help, during 2007. There are many more available on our rehoming pages, so why not take a look through, and see if maybe you could find a comfortable space in your home for one of them. If you can't take on the responsibility for a greyhound, there are a number that require special help, that perhaps you could sponsor instead.
